A transport and income generating project with Mobility India |

Finding accessible transport in a fast growing city like Bangalore was and is a problem and that much more difficult for disabled people to negotiate. Public transport networks in the city are well developed but inaccessible and private vehicles on the whole are inadequate for wheelchairs.
Mobility India’s neat solution was to adapt mini vans by raising the roof height and fixing a foldable ramp. DDP bought into this idea as it was not only providing much needed transportation for people using wheelchairs, or those suddenly incapacitated due to illness needing transport around the city but also a way of generating income for Mobility India.
Adapted vehicles are quite rare in India so Mobility India worked with qualified engineers to adapt minibuses so that they can carry a wheelchair and user. The service – a sort of dial-a-ride – is still operated by MI for public use within Bangalore city limits. |
