DDP’s work in disabled children’s education began with the Makkala Bhavishya (Children’s Future) programme in Bangalore. Our partner Mobility India found many disabled children who were not going to school; they had either dropped out or had never enrolled. The children did not have access to rehabilitation services and their parents were too poor to pay for them. Read more about the Makkala Bhavishya programme which helped many children attend school and their parents to set up Self Help Groups (SHGs) for savings and credit to sustain their children’s education. |

| In 2006, following a situation analysis in the rural district of Chamrajnagar in Karnataka State, South India DDP and Mobility India launched a 5 year programme called Education and Livelihood Opportunities (ELO) to address the difficulties that disabled children face in access, enrolment, retention and achievement in education. Currently working in 70 villages, we plan to expand the programme to cover children’s education in another 102 villages. Working with community leaders and families, ELO is driven by the Self Help Groups (SHGs) of disabled children’s parents and adult disabled citizens whose main priority is to ensure high quality education for all children which of course includes disabled children. |

| A very important aspect of ELO is the provision of rehabilitation services and follow up for disabled children because we cannot address the issue of inclusive education and disabled children without tackling their unmet need for rehabilitation services and mobility aids and appliances. DDP is also partnering with Kiran in Uttar Pradesh State in North India where they run an inclusive education programme to reach out to over 1,000 disabled and excluded children. We will work together to provide rehabilitation services. Read Shilpa’s Story>> |
